MUSIC DRAWINGS by Martin Ehrling
-Music is my great passion.
Drawing is my profession.
Going to concerts have occupied a big part of my free time all my life.
For the last years I have tried to capture my concert impressions in art form.
My music paintings are done directly at the concert location. My intention have been to capture the moment, the intensity, the sense of the music and its physical expression of the musician.
My paintings are portrait of the music. The portrait of the musician itself comes as a bonus, of secondary importance.
-The technique
I make the pictures directly on spot. No sketching or after rework is made. I leave the pictures as they were captured, in its raw and fresh form.
I have used a Japanese brush and hand prepared calligraphy ink, which I prepare while listening and sensing the music. Then I dip the brush and just let go...
The brush will guide itself on the paper. The drawings are made very fast, to capture the movements of the musicians.
The approach is the same as in the calligraphy art.

-The Artist
My Name is Martin Ehrling illustrator for Sweden's largest newspaper Dagens Nyheter , weekly since 1985.
My passion is music, my work is art. Going to concerts is a important part of my life. For the last five years I have documented concerts and festivals in Jazz , world music and folk music. Always working directly on location. No sketching or planing. The way the music enters me, the way it will come out on the paper. The heat, the crowd, the nerve of the music
influence the brushline.
Recently I'm working on music ethnological project to document afrocuban and rumba music in Cuba.
If you find this interesting please contact me for more information.

The actual size of most of the pictures are 30x40cm. To be able to scan them, they have been reduced in a copy machine, then scanned, why the quality of the copy has been reduced. Still it will get you an idea/estimation of the quality on the real artwork.
This is a promotion CD of parts of my paintings. The pictures are not allowed to be reproduced in any form, without my permission.
